I’m sure you noticed that I didn’t have a post yesterday morning. You did notice right? Because you come here every day to see what I’m up to? Right? I knew you did.
In any case, I was M.I.A. for a very good reason. I was Gardening. No, really.
With temps hitting 106 or higher today, I knew it would be best to get out and weed the garden early.
At 8:30 AM, when I walked outside, it was already hot and steamy, and the garden looked like this…
Yeah, I’m a whiz at growing okra and grass. My largest tomato plant is that light yellow spike on the left of the photo. The tall plants are the okra, the vines are some sort of squash, but we don’t know what because we didn’t plant any squash. You can’t even see the peppers or watermelon, but they’re in there. The largest mystery squash looks like this…
Obviously, the garden needs a little weeding, so I set out with scissors, and got busy.
I like to cut the grass out of the garden with scissors. I know that most people would pull all the plants out of the garden, fearing they would rob the veggies of vital nutrients, and they may be right, but as I have mentioned, it’s been over 100 degrees here for 30 days straight. I’m keeping the grass in the garden in hopes that it will shade the ground and roots of my planted plants. I don’t know that it will work, but I’m giving it the ol’ college try.
Unfortunately, after two hours of going all Edward on the grass, the garden only looked like this…
I had found the pepper plants, and two baby peppers! But I still had a lot of cutting to go. I also found this…
It was attached to the stem of one of my okra plants. I may have screamed a little when I knocked it off, and those things startled wiggling. Glad I used my scissors to remove it, instead of my hands. Of course, like any good mother, I ran to get Son so he could see it. We broke the mud ball open, and these squirmed out, albeit slowly…
A quick search didn’t turn anything up, so I have no idea what they are, or would be. I left them to bake in the sun; they were creepy! But notice, the one little green worm. He was in there, but I don’t know why he’s so different from the others. Doesn’t really matter though, since they’re dead now!
Back to work. By lunch time, I was finally finished giving my garden a hair cut. The pile looked like this…
I felt bad letting all this awesome grass go to waste, but I don’t have a cow, or a horse, so I just spread it in the back corner of the yard where we have some low spots.

The hardest part was trimming around the watermelon, since they’re a vine, and wrap little tendrils around the grass. And yes, I know that my tomato plants are small, and that my pepper plants are too, but at least I have one pepper plant with two fruits! Maybe I should take up bonsai since I have a knack for miniaturizing plants.
How do you weed your garden? I think maybe next year, if we do an in-ground garden, I will plant everything wide enough apart to fit the lawn mower between the rows. Or do you know what those creepy things are? Yuck!

Next year why don’t you try a raised bed garden. I think you will find it much easier. It’s a miracle that you have anything growing in your heat. Good luck.
